I have recently started recommending carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) to my patients during their annual physicals. I believe it is especially important if a person has borderline or high cholesterol, a personal or family history of coronary artery disease, elevated blood pressure, or a smoking history. It is a cost-effective means of determining if more aggresive lipid management is warranted to minimize the patient's heart attack and stroke risk.

I first came to see Dr. Turnbow from Seattle because I heard he was the best. I have high blood pressure, and a family history of heart disease, and I don't think there's anything more valuable than my health. So, I decided I was going to take the best care of myself possible. After visiting with Dr. Turnbow, everything I had heard was accurate and then some. He is the most knowledgeable, caring doctor that I've ever seen. And he is the reason that I fly to Colorado twice a year to manage my treatment plan. Dr. Turnbow began treating my pre-disposition to heart attack and/or stroke before he sold the Meadows Medical Center. Due largely to his passion for my health, insistence and our perseverance, I have lost nearly 100 pounds. I have quit smoking, I'm on a rigid exercise regimen, myself and my family eat healthier (thanks to my loving wife) and the most exciting part of all, is that Dr. Turnbow has helped me to understand how all those accomplishments truly reduce my risk. I know how cholesterol, lipids, low density and high density, lipoproteins, blood platelets, body mass index, and plaque...affect my risks. Rest assured Dr. Turnbow is not looking to hire me at his facility as an assistant of any type but at least in my case, to have a sense of how all these things work together motivates me to make positive changes. I have been on several medications for months now and each time we have lab work done, we sit down in Dr. Turnbow's office and he shows me how each medication has changed certain things in my blood to reduce my risk of problems.
Dr. Turnbow and I have come a long way from cough medicine and stitches to LDL and HDL. I could go on forever about how he's changed my health. I'm grateful to him for what he does. And even more grateful for the way he does it. Crispin Porter + Bogusky is an 800+ advertising agency with offices in Miami, Los Angeles, London and Boulder. Twice a year, the Quality of LIfe Department sponsors a "Wellness Week" for employees. Since the ad industry can be highly stressful, we try to remind everyone the importance of taking care of themselves and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Our Wellness Week includes massage sessions, chiropractic exams, kinesis workouts, yoga classes, etc. This year in Boulder, we added a unique perk: Heart Attack Prevention Strategies was invited to screen individuals for any potential heart problems. Dozens of people were given a CIMT ultrasound test of the carotid artery to determine any evidence of plaque or thickening.
The staff from HAPS was very knowledgeable and professional in explaining the painless procedure. Individual reports were sent out in a timely manner that explained the results and gave suggestions for future prevention strategies. Those who were tested were grateful to have had the opportunity to find out if any potential problems existed. In the few cases where a risk was indicated, employees were able to follow up with their doctors and take any necessary steps to resolve the issue.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I think we all agree on that one. So with that in mind I have always gotten a complete physical exam from my doctor each year. I had my last exam one week before meeting with Dr. Turnbow and was given a clean bill of health by my Doctor.
After my exam with Dr. Turnbow, I learn I have a fairly advanced case of arterial sclerosis that my doctor missed completely - and a great candidate for a heart atttach, Why? Because my primary physician wasn't looking in the right places.
What Doctor Turnbow and the small but growing number of preventative maintenance physicians around the country are doing is changing the face of medicine in the United States and it is about time.
As a business owner, I am encouraging all my senior manement to work with Joe and feel so strongly about the value of his work that we're paying whatever costs are not covered by insurance. Let's face it, any company or organization is nothing more than the people within it and if they are healthy, it's money in your back pocket. The Louisville Fire Department made an arrangement with Heart Attack Prevention Strategies to get the CIMTs for any interested firefighters in February 2008. We were extremely happy with the results, as they exceeded all of our expectations. Heart Attack Prevention Strategies was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and delivered everything they said they would and more. Plus, their price was much lower than their competitors. They found one potentially dangerous condition in a 26 year old, healthy looking firefighter, and took the extra steps needed to ensure everything was ok. We are so happy we used them because losing this firefighter would have been devastating to our department, and the cost of replacing him would have been so much higher than their relatively low prices. I would strongly recommend their services to any company.
